What is the AP US History Exam?

The AP US History Exam, also known as APUSH, is an advanced placement exam administered by the College Board to high school students. It assesses their understanding of the historical events, themes, and concepts of United States history.

This challenging exam is designed to prepare students for college-level history courses and help them earn college credit.

The AP US History Exam consists of multiple-choice questions, document-based questions (DBQ), and long essay questions. The multiple-choice section assesses students’ knowledge of historical events and concepts, while the DBQ and long essay questions evaluate their ability to analyze and synthesize historical evidence.

Here’s an overview of key aspects

Format

The exam is divided into two main sections – Section I and Section II. Section I includes multiple-choice questions, while Section II consists of document-based questions (DBQs) and long essay questions.

Multiple-Choice Questions

In Section I, students answer a series of multiple-choice questions that cover various historical periods. This section assesses their factual knowledge and ability to analyze historical data.

Document-Based Questions (DBQs)

Section II includes a set of DBQs where students analyze historical documents and respond to a specific prompt. This assesses their ability to construct historical arguments and support them with evidence.

Long Essay Questions

In Section II, students also respond to long essay questions, demonstrating their ability to construct a coherent and well-argued historical essay.

Historical Periods Covered

The exam spans US history from the pre-Columbian era to the present day. It covers a broad range of topics, including political, economic, social, and cultural developments.

Skills Assessed

The AP US History Exam evaluates skills such as chronological reasoning, comparison and contextualization, crafting historical arguments, and interpreting and analyzing historical evidence.

Scoring

The exam is scored on a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest. Students receive separate scores for each section, and their combined scores contribute to their overall AP US History Exam score.

College Credit

Many colleges and universities in the United States offer credit or advanced placement to students who score well on the AP US History Exam. This can provide students with the opportunity to skip introductory college courses.
