The Bichon Frise dog is very often used as an emotional support animal due to its loving and caring nature in addition to the fact that they are very pleasant and cute looking. Many of the dog owners who apply for an ESA letter opt for this breed of dog as their ESA animal. However, this breed requires loads of daily grooming. Here we will present some tips to easily groom Bichon Frise dogs.

Professional and at-home grooming

Some owners usually go for professional grooming thinking that it is very difficult to groom at home. However, professional grooming is very costly. Nonetheless, the grooming can be done at home too. This only requires some time, plenty of effort, and patience until you become a pro at it. Once learned, the task of keeping these cutest looking, best apartment dogs becomes much easier and saves money too.

Cleaning the fur

The fur of this breed is white, very soft, and velvety. The owners like to keep the fur as it feels very good when touched. Nonetheless, the adult dog’s fur needs to be cut and groomed. A healthy and groomed dog’s fur will spring out again and will feel velvety when touched.

This breed of dog is very hypoallergenic, the fur they shed stays trapped in their outer fur.

Frequency of grooming

Daily at-home fur brushing and once in three weeks professional brushing is what keeps these dogs at their best.

Shedding season

The fur of these dogs even after being shed remains trapped in their bodies due to the thickness of it. Hence, during shedding season they must be detangled and brushed to avoid the formation of mats, dirt, and debris.

Grooming tools

This comb has rounded tines that are closely placed at one end and spaced at the other half of the comb. This is great for finishing off the task of grooming.

Detangling spray

Spraying a detangling spray before combing reduces the brushing time by one-half. This can also be used before giving the bath.

Bristle and Pin brush

This type of brush has pins on one end for brushing and bristles on the other end for adding shine to the fur.

Slicker brush

This brush also has pins on it however the structure is made with a long handle to provide comfort to the owner and avoid fatigue if being held for longer durations.

Grooming steps

Step 1:

Spray on some detangling spray all over the pup. Use hands to remove a few very apparent and tough tangles when your pup is sitting in your lap. The detangling spray helps remove discomfort caused to dogs while brushing.

Step 2:

Start brushing either with a comb or a slicker brush. Brush in the upward direction from the body of the dog. This will cause less abrasion and discomfort.

Use a slicker brush to reach the very bottom of the fur. The skin of BiChon frise is very sensitive hence be very gentle and careful while detangling and brushing the fur.

Step 3:

If it is bath day, this is the right point to give the bath if you have  emotional support dog letter. If not, use the bristle and pin brush at this point to give the final touches to the brushing and add shine to the fur.

Step 4:

If you have given the bath, then add more detangling spray and do combing one more time. End with the bristle and pin spray.

Brushing the teeth

Use a canine brush to help maintain the oral hygiene of the dog. While brushing the teeth, keep an eye on the problem signs.

Trim the hair once a week. Use blurred-nosed scissors for toes.

Nails clipping

Use dog nail clippers, nail grinders, or scissors to cut the nails of the dog’s toes.
